I first created these acrylic masks in large scale to decorate our booth at Freddy & partner’s convention @inkcon I have since then revisited the design re-creating it in several different sizes and materials. This piece features acrylic flower cut outs modeled after the flowers that I include in my paintings. It’s been such a fun process to work and explore the world of acrylic with a little help from the rad @2ndwnd. Happy to be able to donate this piece for Freddy’s 70th birthday show in order to benefit @tattoo_heritage_project . Now for the mushy part… my dearest Freddy, your name was the first name I ever learned while apprenticing under @ogsneeks. I observed him as he was doing a b&g tattoo, I asked him a question and his reply is what stuck in my head forever… “If you want to know anything about Black and Grey, look to Freddy Negrete. Freddy Negrete is Black and Grey God.” I’m not one to remember names very well, but your name never left my mind… fast-forward 6 years later, I opened my first business, an art gallery with an amazing group show lineup, including @antoniopelayo whom unbeknownst to me, was your business partner at that time… You showed up to my opening show for my very first business… Like a total G…Freddy Negrete was at MY art gallery opening!!! I couldn’t believe it. We kept in touch, and you were always so encouraging with my tattooing, even though I was still such a novice, it meant the world to me and it still does. About 7 years after this first encounter our paths crossed again as I reached out to you and asked if Shamrock Social Club could use any female tattooers… Little did I know, I’d be the first … But through you, it happened. I met Mark Mahoney, + the guys and started working there alongside of you and Booboo and all the other BAMFs. Any moment I had to spare, I would watch you tattoo. You’re so masterful. every single stroke is purposeful. It’s like watching the rhythm of a painter. Your stoic demeanor and eloquent execution are so admirable. “Eterna Primavera” my latest installation at the @azygousarthaus A 5 foot diameter floral collage: I made this using up cycled flowers from our friends over at @ecoset which I then attached to grids. I had a 5 foot diameter flower cut out in the shape of the pink background flower of my skeletal paintings. I attached the grids to the 5 foot flower with wire. I then added butterfly details and an LED strip to brighten up the structure. The title of this piece means “eternal springtime.” A phrase used to describe Medellin, Colombia. This piece is inspired by the floral Cárieles displayed during the Feria de las Flores. The piece also features an 18 inch mirror in the direct center, allowing the viewer to become a part of the art. There’s something very satisfying about working with my hands. It almost feels like turning my brain off and allowing my body to do the work. I’ve also been enjoying exploring the idea of texture and interaction, I love to see the relationship art can have with the person that is experiencing it. The process of creating “Carolina’s Flowers” Oil on wood panel in vintage frame 16 x 20 in (23 x 27 framed) Now taking preorders for 16x 20 in archival prints. DM for inquiries 🤍 This painting was created in ode to the Renaissance paintings of floral vases that I love so very much. I created the original design as a tattoo for @carolinavoldt after completing her tattoo I felt the need to keep pushing the design, so I decided to return the tattoo line work to its original inspiration- the Renaissance style painting. This has definitely respawned my love of oil painting and I’m excited to continue this style of work. Why?
